Lec 01 What is the reality of Evil Eye?
Question Number: 4132
Assalam-o-Alaikum Mufti Sahib!
What is the reality of evil eye? What is its cure? What are the
Masnoon Azkaar (Authentic Invocations from Sunnah) for its prevention?
Answer:
Evil eye or being afflicted with an evil eye is an ancient concept found
in different world nations. In the beginning era of Islam, the enemies
of Islam intended to avail services of those people of Arab who were famous for
casting an evil eye, in order to cause damage to Islam. These people used to
claim that anything that they looked at with the intention to cause harm would
get destroyed as soon as they looked at it. Allah Ta’la protected the Prophet
(Peace be upon him) from their evil and all evil tactics of these malevolent people
failed. Their wickedness has been explained in the Quran as follows:
51
And the disbelievers seem to trip you up with their glances
when they hear the Reminder, and say, “He is a madman indeed.” Surah Qalam:51
In this verse, there is an indication of hazard within an evil eye
which can affect the body and soul of the other person. Therefore, Prophet (Peace
be upon Him) said,
“The influence of evil eye is
true,” and forbade tattooing.
Al-Bukhari, Sahih, 5: 2167, Issue: 5408, Beirut, Lebanon: Dar Ibn
Kathir al-Imamah.
Muslim, Sahih, 4: 1719,
Issue: 2187, Beirut, Lebanon: Dar Ahyaya al-Turath al-Arabi.
Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, Al-Musnad,
2: 319, Issue: 8228, Egypt: Est.
Narrated Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him)
that Prophet Peace is upon him said:
The influence of an evil eye is a reality, if anything would precede destiny it would be the influence of an evil eye and when you are asked to bathe
(as a cure) from the influence of an evil eye, you should bathe.

The evil eye has bad (harmful) effects. Hazrat Muhammad (Peace be upon
Him) has instructed us to follow incantation (Ruqyah) as protection from the evil eye.
When Hazrat Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) was asked about Ruqyah, he
said, “Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) gave permission to use incantation
(as a remedy) for three things, sting of a scorpion, small pustules and dispelling
the influence of evil eye.”
Muslim, Sahih, 4: 1725, Number: 2196
Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, Al-Masnad,
3: 118, Number: 12194
At-Tirmidhi, Al-Sunan, 4:
393, Issue: 2056, Beirut, Lebanon: Dar Ahyaya al-Turath al-Arabi.
Rather, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)
commanded: “You are allowed to use Incantation (Ruqyah) for the sting of a scorpion,
small pustules and the evil eye.”
Hazrat Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her) said that the Messenger of
Allah (Peace be upon him) commanded her to use incantation (Ruqyah) for (curing)
affliction by the evil eye.
Sahih Bukhari, 5:2166, Raqim: 5406
Sahih Muslim, 4:1725, Raqim: 2195
Another Hadith quotes,
Narrated Hazrat Umme Salamah (May Allah be pleased with her) that
the Prophet (Peace be upon him) saw a girl in my house who had scars (black
spots) on her face. He said, “She has been afflicted by the evil eye, so treat her
with Ruqyah.”
Sahih Bukhari, 5:2167, Raqm: 5407
Sahih Muslim, 4:1725, Raqm: 2197
To treat evil eye, Al-Muʽawwidhatan should be recited and the
following invocation (proven from Hadith) should also be made as narrated by that
Wife of Prophet (Peace be upon him, Hazrat Aisha (May Allah be pleased with
her), “When Allah’s Messenger (Peace be upon him) fell sick, Gabreil (AS) used
to recite this, “In the name of Allah, may He cure you from all kinds of
illnesses and safeguard you from the evil of a jealous one when he feels
jealous and from the evil influence of eye.”
The last two Surahs of the Quran are known as Al-Muʽawwidhatan in which refuge
has been sought, hence they are also used for the treatment of the evil eye.
Narrated Hazrat Aisha Siddiqa (May Allah be pleased with her):
“During the Prophet’s fatal illness, he used to recite the Al-Muʽawwidhatan
(Surah An-Nas and Surah Al-Falaq) and then blow his breath over his body. When
his illness was aggravated, I used to recite those two Surahs and blow over his
blessed body and make him rub his blessed body with his own hand for its
blessings.”
Sahih Bukhari, 5:2165, Raqm: 5403
Sahih Muslim, 4:1723, Raqm: 2192
It is confirmed from the narrations mentioned above that the evil eye is
neither a delusion nor a superstition but a (true) reality and it is rightful
to be cured by incantation (Ruqyah) when the effects of the evil eye appear.
